With Relational Organizing, as with most things in life, the early bird gets the worm. In this case, the worm is victory, pride and an electoral agenda that won't bring shame to our children and grandchildren.
We know how it is. It’s hard to ask a volunteer to knock doors in the freezing cold of January, when the election is still two professional sporting seasons away.
But here’s the thing: a quality Relational Organizing program grows exponentially. The more time you put into it now, the more it will deliver for you later. In other words, if you want to be the one dining on that worm tomorrow, you better get to work today.
It’s important to remember that Relational Organizing is not just about “Getting Out The Vote” (GOTV). Studies have shown that a GOTV contact should happen within two weeks of election day. Which makes sense: people need that last minute reminder to get out there and exercise their right to have a say in our country’s future.
But this is where things get interesting. We worked with numerous organizations in 2018 on implementing and managing RO programs throughout the electoral cycle. And the Analyst Institute has now run studies showing that a relational contact is more effective if it began before the traditional GOTV period.
How much more likely? 4 times.
Because the earlier you start, the more opportunities your volunteers have to recruit additional volunteers, who can then, themselves, recruit additional volunteers. #ExponentialGrowth
And if a program is started early, your volunteers can have numerous touch points with their networks, rather than just a last second reminder to vote.
And let’s never forget the impact that hearing from a friend has on the likelihood of someone heading to the polls. In a 2015 AI study, members of the Young Dems at William and Mary were randomly called by either a friend or a member of the campaign. Those who were reached out to from friends were 21% more likely to volunteer than those who were contacted by a member of the campaign.
So here’s a question for you: what will your organizing program do with all those extra volunteers? You better step up your pizza and coffee budgets… your program is going to need it!
